Drug Name
Minocin (Minocycline)
Pharmacological action
It is an antibiotic of tetracycline group. It has bacteriostatic effect due to inhibition of protein synthesis by reversible binding to ribosomal subunit 30S of susceptible microorganisms.
It is active against Gram-positive bacteria: Staphyloccocus aureus, Streptococcus spp, Bacillus anthracis; Gram-negative bacteria: Neisseria meningitidis, Bartonella bacilliformis, Vibrio cholerae, Esherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Shigella spp., Acinetobacter spp., Haemophilus spp.; anaerobic bacteria: Clostridium spp., Bacteroides spp.
Minocycline is also active against Mycobacterium spp. (including Mycobacterium leprae), Chlamydia spp., Ureaplasma urealyticum, Treponema pallidum.
Side effect
Possible: vestibular disorders (dizziness, instability), pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes, hepatotoxic effect, nausea, vomiting, candidiasis.
Contraindications to use
Impaired liver function, children under 8 years of age, hypersensitivity to tetracyclines.
Usage during pregnancy and lactation
Minocycline penetrates the placental barrier and is excreted with the breast milk.
It is not used during the second half of pregnancy and lactation period because minocycline causes discoloration of teeth, enamel hypoplasia and skeletal bone growth disorders in fetus and child.
Administration in liver dysfunction
It is contraindicated in cases of liver dysfunction.
Administration in children
Minocycline causes discoloration of teeth, enamel hypoplasia and disorder of fetal and child skeletal growth, therefore, minocycline is not used in children under 8 years of age.
Special Guidelines
Minocycline absorption is impaired when taken with milk and dairy products.

Indications of active substance Minocin (Minocycline)
Acne, nocardiasis, leprosy (as part of combination therapy); Infectious and inflammatory diseases caused by pathogens sensitive to minocycline (incl. pneumonia, bronchitis, pleural empyema, angina, cholecystitis, pyelonephritis, intestinal infections, endocarditis, endometritis, prostatitis, syphilis, gonorrhea, brucellosis, rickettsiosis, purulent soft tissue infections, osteomyelitis, trachoma).
Dosing regimen
When taken orally, the daily dose for adults is 100-200 mg.
For children over 8 years old the dose is 4 mg/kg, then 2 mg/kg every 12 hours.
