Drug Name

Furadantin (Nitrofurantoin)

Pharmacological action

A broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, a nitrofuran derivative. It has a bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect in urinary tract infections. Nitrofurantoin is active against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp.


It is effective mainly against urinary tract infections.

Pharmacokinetics

Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Bioavailability is 50% (food increases bioavailability). Absorption rate depends on the size of crystals (microcrystalline form is characterized by fast solubility and absorption rate, short time to reach Cmax in urine). Binding to plasma proteins is 60%. Metabolized in the liver and muscle tissue. T1/2 is 20-25 min. It penetrates through the barrier of the human body, placental barrier and is excreted with breast milk. Completely excreted by the kidneys (30-50% - unchanged).

Contraindications to use

Severe renal excretory dysfunction, renal failure, oliguria, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, pregnancy, early childhood (less than 1 month), hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin, heart failure stage II-III, liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, acute porphyria, lactation.

Use in pregnancy and lactation

Nitrofurantoin is contraindicated in pregnancy and during lactation (breast-feeding).

Special indications

The risk of peripheral neuropathy increases in patients with anemia, diabetes mellitus, electrolyte imbalance, B vitamin deficiencies, severe renal insufficiency.


Nitrofurantoin should not be used for treatment of cortical kidney disease, purulent paranefritis and prostatitis. Nitrofurantoin is not prescribed in combination with drugs causing renal dysfunction.

Indications of active substance Furadantin (Nitrofurantoin)

Infectious inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract (including pyelonephritis, cystitis), caused by microorganisms sensitive to nitrofurantoin.

Dosage regimen

The dose for adults is 50-100 mg, the frequency of administration is 4 times a day. The daily dose for children is 5-7 mg/kg in 4 doses. The duration of treatment course is 7 days. If necessary, treatment may be continued for another 3 days (only after checking urine for sterility). Doses of nitrofurantoin should be reduced during long-term maintenance treatment.
