Drug Title
Compazine (Prochlorperazine)
Pharmacological action
Antipsychotic (neuroleptic), piperazine derivative of phenothiazine. It has antipsychotic and sedative effects. Sedative and autonomic nervous system effects are weaker than in other phenothiazines, antiemetic and extrapyramidal effects are stronger. It attenuates psychotic symptoms - delirium and hallucinations; at the same time, it has an activating (stimulating, energizing) effect.
Contraindications to use
Severe cardiovascular diseases (decompensated chronic heart failure, arterial hypotension), marked CNS depression and comatose states of any etiology; brain injury, progressive systemic diseases of the brain and spinal cord, pregnancy, lactation.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
Contraindicated in pregnancy and during lactation.
Administration in children
Cautiously apply in children in chronic diseases accompanied by respiratory disorders; in Reye syndrome (increased risk of hepatotoxicity in children and adolescents).
Indications of the active substance Compazine (Prochlorperazine)
Schizophrenia, involutionary psychosis (with predominance in the clinical picture of lethargy, apathy, asthenia, sub-stuporose and stuporose states).
Nausea and vomiting.
Dosage regimen
Orally, after a meal, the initial daily dose is 12.5-25 mg, with a gradual increase in dose by 12.5-25 mg/day to a maximum daily dose of 150-300 mg. Duration of treatment is 2-3 months or more, after which the dose is gradually reduced to a maintenance dose. Nausea and vomiting: 5-10 mg 3-4 times per day. Elderly patients, emaciated or weakened patients usually require a lower starting dose; if necessary and taking into account tolerability, it is gradually increased.
